Recording your screen is built into both macOS and Windows. The built-in tools are fine for a quick clip, but they stop at a file on your desktop. Here is how to use them, and when a screen recorder that shares a link is the better choice.
On a Mac
- Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the Screenshot toolbar.
- Choose “Record entire screen” or “Record selected portion”.
- Open Options and pick your microphone so your voice is recorded.
- Click Record. Stop from the menu bar; the video is saved to your desktop.
The built-in recorder does not record system audio, add your camera, or give you a link to share.
On Windows
- Open the Snipping Tool and switch to the video camera icon, or press Windows + Alt + R to record with the Xbox Game Bar.
- Choose the area or window to record and turn on the microphone.
- Stop the recording; the file is saved to your Videos folder.
Game Bar records one app window at a time and is built for games, so it cannot record the desktop or File Explorer.
The faster way: record and share a link
With ClipnClip you record your screen, your camera or both from the browser or the desktop app. When you press stop, the link is already on your clipboard, with a transcript, summary and chapters written for you. Viewers watch without an account and comment on the exact second.
- Screen, camera or both, up to 4K.
- Microphone and, on the desktop app, cursor zoom and click highlights.
- A link the moment you stop, instead of a file to upload.
