How to blur sensitive information in a screen recording

· 3 min read

Screen recordings capture everything: browser tabs, inboxes, customer names, the API key you forgot was open. If it shows on screen, it goes to everyone with the link. You don't have to record again to fix it.

What to look for before you share

  • Passwords, API keys and tokens
  • Email addresses and customer names
  • Account numbers and billing details
  • Browser tabs, bookmarks and notifications

Blur it for the right moment

A good blur covers one area for only as long as it's on screen, so the rest of the video stays clear. If the content moves, add another region rather than covering the whole screen.

Make sure the blur is permanent

A blur shown over a video by the player can sometimes be removed. A blur burnt into the file can't, because the original pixels are gone. In ClipnClip, saving a blur creates a new video file and removes the old one, so check your regions first: it can't be undone.
