How to compress a video to a specific file size

· 3 min read

Email attachments, chat apps and upload forms all have size limits, and a screen recording can pass them quickly. The fix isn't a smaller screen or a shorter take. It's choosing the right bitrate for the size you need.

How video size works

File size is roughly bitrate multiplied by length. A 5-minute video at 2 megabits per second comes to about 75 MB. To hit a target, divide the size you need by the video's length, leave a little room for the audio, and encode at that bitrate.

What size to aim for

  • Check the limit of wherever you're sending it, and aim about 5% under.
  • Screen recordings compress well because most of the picture stays still.
  • Long videos need bigger targets. One hour in 25 MB won't be readable.

The quick way

In ClipnClip, open a video, choose Export, then Compress, and type the size in MB. It works out the bitrate for you and tells you if the target is too small for that video's length. Your original isn't changed.
